A telephone call from a frantic Sergeant Cantelli to say that his nephew, Johnnie Oslow, is missing cuts short Detective Inspector Horton's sailing trip to France. Summoned back to the Isle of Wight, Horton learns that Johnnie has not shown up for racing during Cowes Week, as previously arranged. The investigation is ranked low priority by Horton's boss, Detective Chief Inspector Lorraine Bliss, who like others believes Johnnie has probably gone off with a woman.
But events take a very different turn when the charred remains of a body are discovered in one of the disused tunnels at the Hilsea Lines in Portsmouth. With the arrival of Detective Chief Superintendent Sawyer of the Intelligence Directorate and Agent Harriet Eames of Europol, what began as the hunt for a missing man becomes the search for a ruthless killer.

Adventure, mystery and heroes have always fascinated and thrilled Pauline Rowson. That, and her love of the sea, have led her to create a new sub genre - her unique marine mysteries. These feature her flawed and rugged detective, Inspector Andy Horton whose patch is the Solent area on the south coast of England.
Pauline's journey is no ordinary one, and that's what makes her a popular author and an inspirational speaker. Raised in a working class household, Pauline was often left to fend for herself, creating stories for her friends, enacted on the former waste tip at the back of the house, and she wrote her first adventure novel aged eleven. She became a renowned marketing and training guru, with a collection of business books and a successful marketing, media and training company behind her, before she made it into the world of best-selling crime fiction.
She can never be far away from the sea without suffering withdrawal symptoms, and enjoys thinking through her plots while knitting and walking along the south coast of England, but not at the same time!
