He played the role of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, for which he received the Best Actor Academy Award, among other accolades. Rhys Thomas is a director, producer, actor, comedian and writer. He directed the feature-length documentary about Freddie Mercury in 2012. It won the Rose d'Or for Best Arts Documentary and the International Emmy for Best Arts Documentary.
