Summary
Lily the Tiller is a nomadic gardener on the permanent lam from a bleak, abusive past. Scouring the lanes of South West England looking for temporary work, she pitches up at Motthoe, a now dilapidated, but once grand, country estate, where Dreamer Harry - Motthoe's reluctant owner via recent inheritance - falls for her with only the slimmest hopes of reciprocation. In Lily's care, a walled garden at Motthoe begins to blossom and the greening magic of this new life touches each of Motthoe's cast of idiosyncratic inhabitants. But, even in the midst of this community blossoming, dark hints and ill-omens suggest Lily's grim history can be run from no longer.

Practically Perfect in Every Way This is an absolutely perfect story in the fashion of my cherished Jane Austen. I received a message from a dear friend who said I might want to check out a new book. I will be forever grateful for that message. In this time of great sorrow, this story gives hope in a very real, very possible, way. -- L. L. Love * Amazon (UK) * A beautifully written story If you are looking for the perfect book to read this spring and summer, I would definitely recommend this one. The setting is in a dilapidated, old country estate and different members of the local community all get drawn there all because of the charm and magnetism of Lily. The writing is beautiful and lyrical. You are swept away into a glorious garden where Lily works her magic bringing it back to life. It is such a feel good book and it really did make me smile. I felt I could smell the flowers, feel the soil between my toes and hear the birds singing. It is such a luscious and immersive treat for readers. The various array of characters all bring a different tale to the story. They all seem a be a bit lost and unsure what they are doing with their lives. Thanks to Lily and her garden, she changes their lives and brings comfort to them all. Lily herself has a dark history that starts to come to light the further you delve into the pages. But her friends are there for her and makes her realise that she may have found a home at last. Lily the Tiller is a feel good story about the power of community and friendship. It gives you a sense of freedom and appreciation for nature and others. -- Claire Jones * Amazon (UK) * Wow Breathtaking . I mean , how am I supposed to even review this book. Firstly let me start by being completely honest, never judge a book by its cover. Well I failed. I received this book from love book tours a couple of months ago and it sat on my tbr shelf until last week when I picked it up not really expecting much to be honest. I started reading it and immediately was confused . The writing style is completely unique. Every word is prose, pure poetry a love letter to language with depth in every line. It's remarkable and it just continued and continued to delight me the more I read. The plot is deep , the writing poetic, the characters thoughtfully constructed . It is a slow burn. The beginning is a little bit slow pace but the story builds fairly quickly . I want to escape to lilys garden, regardless of her demons and bask in the beauty she has created. My only disappointment with this book is I have realised how pathetically limited my vocabulary is, I crave to one day use language the way Deborah McKinley does through every page. Thank you Deborah McKinley for this remarkable piece of art and I can't wait to read more from this talented author. * Amazon (UK) * 5.0 out of 5 stars A book that speaks to your soul Lily the Tiller is a book that honestly speaks to your soul. I have read it two times already and each time gives me a different feeling - that's what a brilliant book does. It is really beautifully written, I picked it up, read it in one sitting and repeat. It does not matter if it is spring, summer, autumn, or winter, whatever season it may be, whatever mood you may be in, this book is what I would call perfection. Highly recommend it and the other works (esp That Part Was True) of Deborah McKinlay. -- Cherry Anastasia Chan * Amazon (UK) * 5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable read. At first, I found the writing style quite different, which took a little while to get used to. It wasn't a bad different, just maybe that I've not read a third person pov for a long time so needed getting used to. This said, once I got used to this style, I found it really quite refreshing and enjoyable. The character development worked really well throughout and I loved the way Lily and her garden brought together all the different characters and bonded them all in different ways. With so many main characters, there were quite a few back stories to work through, each with their own little traumas or situations, but I don't think that this was too much at any point. All of the stories being told well and linking each to the present nicely. A really enjoyable read. The bringing together of such different people and then the joining together to support and heal each other and make each feel included and part of this new happy family. * Amazon (UK) * 5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for a weekend read I haven't been able to settle to reading a book for a good while for some reason, but this book drew me in from the first page. I got drawn in to the Motthoe story, loved how the characters grew, and I could envisage the walled garden as it blossomed. I didn't want the story to end! -- Amazon customer * Amazon (UK) * 5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous This is that rare thing: a book that is beautifully-written, insightful, poetic, funny and rich in humanity, but also has a gripping story. In fact it's a very long time since I've felt so deeply invested in the ultimate safety of a lead character! It's a totally absorbing, delicious read - the perfect antidote to our troubled times. I'm already looking forward to reading it again. -- Elizabeth Bennett * Amazon (UK) *
